Kara Kozhukattai/ Spicy Rice Dumplings

  • 1 cup Rice flour
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 3/4 cup Water
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • For grinding
  • 1 tbsp Channa dal/ Split bengal gram
  • 1 tbsp Urad dal/ White lentil
  • 2 Dry red chillies
  • 1/2 tsp Whole black peppercorns
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp Grated coconut
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • For seasoning
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp Red chilli powder
  • Step 1 Boil water in a sauce pan. Take it off the heat and add a teaspoon of oil and salt to taste. Then add the rice flour, mix well with a laddle till the mixture thickens. Cover the mixture and keep it aside till the mixture is warm to handle.
  • Step 2 Knead the dough well till you get a soft consistency. Slightly grease your hands with oil or dip your hands in water before kneading the dough. Do the same before making small balls using your palm.
  • Step 3 Place the dumplings in a an oiled steaming plate and steam it for 8-10 minutes. Remove and allow it cool down.
  • Step 4 Heat a pan, dry roast the ingredients for grinding on low heat until it turns golden brown. Let it cool, then grind it to a semi fine mixture.
  • Step 5 Heat oil in a pan, add in mustard seeds and let it splutter. Add cumin seeds, then add turmeric powder and chilli powder. Saute for 10 seconds, then add in the steamed kozhukattai/ rice dumplings. Give it a quick toss and take it off the heat and serve.
