Dutch Apple Cake


  • 5 Apples
  • Juice of 1 Lemon
  • Grated zest of 1 Lemon
  • 1 tbsp Cinnamon powder
  • 1 tsp Mixed spice powder
  • 1/2 tsp Ground ginger
  • 1 3/4 Plain flour
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 150 g Unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Essence
  • 3 tbsp Milk


  1. Wash, peel and cut the aplles into 1/4 inch slices. Place it into a large bowl.
  2. Add cinnamon, mixed spice, ground ginger, lemon zest and jice of one lemon to the sliced apples. Combine well and keep it aside.
  3. Preheat the oven to 160 C. Prepare a 9 inch cake tin with parchment paper on the bottom, and butter the sides of the tin and dust with plain flour. Tap the excess flour out.
  4. In another bowl, cream butter, sugar and vanilla essence until light and fluffy.
  5. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  6. Now, gradually add the plain flour and 3 tablespoons of milk to the creamed mixture and beat until smooth.
  7. Transfer very small amount of cake batter to the prepared tin and spread a thin layer. Place apple slices onto the batter, placing them close together.
  8. Add half of the batter and spread it over the arranged apples. Now repeat the arrangement of the apples, and add the remaining cak batter and spread it evenly over the apples.
  9. Arrange the remaining apple slices and bake it for one to one and half hours, or until a tooth pick inserted comes out clean.
  10. Cool for ten minutes, before removing from tin to a wire rack. Serve this delicious apple cake warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. 🙂
