Vellarikka Pachadi/ Cucumber in Coconut Yogurt Sauce

Vellarikka pachadi is a Keralan side dish served as an accompaniment for rice and is prepared mostly for Kerala sadya (feast for special occasions like Onam). It’s a very simple and healthy dish made with cucumber, ground coconut and yogurt. A must try recipe for those who like vegetarian food.

  • 1 large Vellarikka/ Cucumber
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • Salt to taste
  • 3/4 cup Yogurt
  • For grinding
  • 1/2 cup Grated coconut
  • 2 Green Chillies
  • 1/4 inch piece of Ginger
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  • For tempering
  • 1 tbsp Coconut oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 2 Dry red chillies (broken)
  • 1 sprig of Curry leaves
  • Step 1 Peel the cucumber, discard the seeds and cut it into small pieces. Cook the cucumber with a 1/4 cup of water and salt, till it’s soft.
  • Step 2 Meanwhile, grind grated coconut, green chillies, cumin seeds, mustard seeds and ginger with few table spoons of water to a smooth paste.
  • Step 3 Add this to the cooked cucumber, cook this on low flame for 4-5 minutes. Remove this from the hob and allow it to cool completely.
  • Step 4 Add yogurt to the dish and adjust salt as per taste.
  • Step 5 Temper mustard seeds, dry red chillies and curry leaves and pour this over the pachadi. Gently mix and serve this with hot rice.
