Swedish Meatballs

Ingredients
  • 1/3 cup Bread crumbs
  • 1 Onion (chopped)
  • 1 clove Garlic (minced)
  • 1 tbsp Parsley (finely chopped)
  • 300 g Minced Chicken/ Pork
  • 450 g Minced Beef
  • 3/4 tsp Pepper
  • 1/4 tsp Ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp Allspice
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 Egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • Vegetable oil
  • For the gravy
  • 6 tbsp Butter
  • 1/4 cup Plain flour
  • 2 cups Beef broth (or stock)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to season
Directions
  • Step 1 In a large bowl, mix breadcrumbs together with the milk, egg, garlic, salt, pepper and spice. Allow the milk to soak into the breadcrumbs for at least 10 minutes.
  • Step 2 Once the milk has absorbed, add in the onion, minced chicken and beef and parsley. Mix the meat mixture well using your hands. Shape the meat into 1 inch meatballs.
  • Step 3 In a pan heat some butter, add the meatballs and fry until golden all around, about 5-7 minutes. Repeat with all meatballs. Transfer to a warm plate and cover with foil.
  • Step 4 For the gravy, heat butter in a pan. Whisk in the flour until it dissolves. Pour in the broth, cream and dijon mustard. Bring to a to simmer and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Step 5 Soon the gravy will thicken, then add in the meatballs and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure meatballs don’t stick to bottom of pan. Serve over pasta, egg noodles or mashed potatoes.
